Did you know that the cherished Heritage Center & Indian River Citrus Museum almost met its end in 1991? At that time, the City of Vero Beach planned to demolish this historic site. However, thanks to the remarkable efforts of a group of dedicated citizens led by Millie Bunnell, this valuable piece of our community's history was saved.
In a remarkable display of civic pride and determination, and within one week, these citizens successfully lobbied the city council to spare the building from demolition. Then, they formed the nonprofit organization Vero Heritage, Inc. to take stewardship of the building. Since then, this organization has been solely responsible for maintaining and preserving the Heritage Center.
Our Self-Sufficient Legacy
Today, the Heritage Center & Indian River Citrus Museum stands as a testament to the power of community action and the importance of preserving our shared heritage. We are proud to say that we are self-sufficient, relying solely rentals of the Heritage Center and on the support of individuals like you who recognize the value of preserving our history for future generations.
